Global social media platform X (formerly Twitter) is accelerating its evolution into the financial super app envisioned by Elon Musk by introducing an innovative feature that allows users to instantly trade stocks and virtual assets directly from their timelines.

According to a February 14 (local time) report by cryptocurrency-focused outlet BeInCrypto, X plans to launch its Smart Cashtags feature next month and fully integrate a virtual asset trading system within the platform. Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, stated through his account that Smart Cashtags will enable users to precisely designate specific assets or smart contracts when creating posts. By tapping a ticker displayed on the timeline, users will be able to view real-time price information and related mentions, as well as execute immediate buy and sell orders through integrated trading buttons.

The introduction of this feature is seen as a key part of owner Elon Musk’s strategy to transform X into an “Everything App” that offers comprehensive financial services. With approximately 700 million active users worldwide, X is expected to drive massive new inflows into the virtual asset market if direct trading on the timeline becomes widely adopted. Bier emphasized that X is the most powerful source of financial news, noting that hundreds of billions of dollars in capital move based on information users read on the platform.

X had previously provided price charts for major assets such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) through partnerships with TradingView and eToro. However, the Smart Cashtags feature represents a more advanced step by directly linking payments and trading within the platform. X has already secured money transmitter licenses in more than 24 U.S. states, and the integration of trading functions is expected to generate significant synergy alongside the launch of its digital wallet service, X Money.

Experts believe that X’s move could serve as a decisive turning point in blurring the boundaries between traditional finance and virtual assets. As major assets like Bitcoin gain real-time exposure to hundreds of millions of social media users and are paired with instant trading capabilities, the pace of cryptocurrency mainstream adoption is likely to accelerate further. However, specific operational details have not been disclosed, including whether in-app trading will be brokered through third-party exchanges or supported by X’s own settlement system.

X is currently focusing on finalizing infrastructure development and localization efforts ahead of the official launch of Smart Cashtags. If this new platform model—combining financial services with social media—successfully gains market traction, competition for dominance among traditional cryptocurrency exchanges and fintech companies is expected to intensify. As the first building block of Elon Musk’s envisioned financial empire falls into place, global investors and the technology industry are closely watching next month’s official rollout.
