He suggested applying a square-root-of-two reduction model to progressively reduce the current 12-second slot time to 8 seconds, 6 seconds, 4 seconds, 3 seconds, and ultimately 2 seconds, emphasizing that each step would proceed only when the network proves it can safely handle the change. Buterin also mentioned improving the P2P network using tools such as erasure coding to reduce block propagation delays, while developers are actively exploring a new single-round Byzantine fault tolerance mechanism called “Minimmit.” Originally conceived at a January 2026 workshop as a flexible discussion framework rather than a fixed roadmap, the Strawmap has now been formally introduced.
